The lives of our employees and contractors are our highest value, overriding any other objective
In the Zero Harm culture of Minera Escondida the lives of its employees and contractors are of the highest value. The programs of the Zero Harm culture seek to motivate and permanently focus the behaviour of the employees and contractors on caring for their own safety and that of their co-workers. With the objective of adequately preventing, controlling and managing the risks associated with the operation and complying with current regulations, the Company has a centralized system for recording incidents and accidents. In addition, apart from being governed by the classification required by Chilean legislation, Escondida maintains its own indicators in accordance with BHP Billiton guidelines, which allows the comparison of its performance with other operations at the international level. This system is audited periodically, thus making it more reliable. In relation to occupational health, one of the main efforts is the SIMEL program, which consists of a series of physical examinations conducted every two years on all direct workers aimed at detecting potential effects of agents present in the operations, as well as common disease. Should a disease be detected, the Company supports its employees in the search for treatment and recovery.
