Minera Escondida receives Safety award



-The Chilean National Service for Geology and Mining (Sernageomin), distinguished Minera Escondida as one of the two large mining companies with the best safety performance during 2008.

The distinction was granted within the frame of the Mining Safety Annual Contest for companies in the category of equal or above one million man hours worked.

Carlos Mesquita, President Minera Escondida, received the award from the national Director of Sernageomin, Alejandro Vio at a ceremony that took place in Santiago on Monday, August 3.

Carlos Mesquita commented “we are very happy to receive this award because it is an acknowledgement of all the work we have done”, he also pointed out the job done in the field by the leaders of the organization in learning about workers´concerns and eliminating unsafe conditions and activities. “As I always tell our people: Escondida´s most important value is the safety of its workers. This is more important than production or financial results. This is the most significant recognition that Minera Escondida has been awarded during the past two years and I dedicate it to all the workers.”

On the occasion the Minister of Mines, Santiago González, stated that “Minera Escondida has once again stood out for its consideration towards safety. I have visited Escondida and seen on the field the care that the Company places on safety and its workers.”
