Escondida contributes to innovation
-New contribution by Minera Escondida for innovation and technological development
Santiago, July 2009. In the presence of President Michelle Bachelet, Minera Escondida formalized
its commitment to make a further contribution to Fundación Chile for the development of innovation,
technological management and human capital in Chile. Fundación Chile is a private, non-profit organization
with a solid position as a leader in the creation and promotion of innovative businesses with high impact
on the key sectors of the Chilean economy.
Minera Escondida´s contribution consists in a US$ 10 million endowment that will be matched in the same amount
by the Chilean State. In year 2005 both parties materialized an equivalent amount, making a total to date of US$ 40 million.
The strengthening of the Minera Escondida alliance with Fundación Chile and the Chilean State takes place at a time when
innovation and technological development are under a special focus looking into the country’s following stage of development.
This contribution is made within the framework of BHP Billiton´s sustainable development policy, which aims to install human
and social capacity in its host communities, beyond the life of its operations. In this manner, innovation, together with education,
culture and heritage, is one of the areas en which Minera Escondida develops investment projects in Chile.
