Minera Escondida inaugurated first Bicentennial Project

-Escondida inaugurated the first of the projects which with it adheres to the celebration of Chile’s 200 years of independence.

Inaugurated June 5, the new library of Toconao’s school, is an ample space with a significant book collection to promote reading and learning among the children of the rural and indigenous community of Toconao.

The building is for the purpose of culture and education and also the first of Escondida’s Bicentennial Projects that the Company is developing since 2006 jointly with the Minera Escondida Foundation and partners from the public sector and civil society, to adhere to the celebration of Chile’s Bicentennial. The initiative consists on a set of social and infrastructure projects in health, housing, education, tourism, sports, integration and social reinsertion, which will contribute to improve the quality of life and development of the population of the Antofagasta Region.

The construction of the library building was complemented by a mural painted by Atacamenian children, reflecting their dreams, the magic of reading, nature and indigenous heritage.

Minera Escondida’s Bicentennial Projects are developed based on a community management project that includes a permanent social dialogue, the detection of community needs and the formation of an alliance between public and private sectors and civil society. This model was distinguished by the Chilean Government with the 2008 Bicentennial Seal in a ceremony that took place at the La Moneda Palace in December 2008.
