Minera Escondida Obtains Bicentennial Seal
The President of the Republic distinguished the Community Management Model used
by the Company in the implementation of the project with which the Company
participates in preparation for the country’s celebration of 200 years of
independence in 2010.
In a ceremony that took place in the La Moneda Presidential Palace, the President
of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, awarded the 2008 Bicentennial Seal to the
“Minera Escondida Bicentennial Project: Community Management Model for the
Antofagasta Region”. This model integrates a permanent social dialogue, capturing
the community’s needs and expectations, with a novel alliance between the public
and private sectors and civil society.
Vice President Human Resources, Jorge Muñoz del Pino who received the Bicentennial Seal
indicated that this distinction recognizes the management model that is part of the
Company’s community relations plan and has been advocated during the past years.
Since 2006, Minera Escondida jointly with the Minera Escondida Foundation is
developing its “Bicentennial Project”, a commitment through which it promotes an
integral initiative to contribute to a better quality of life, more spaces for
encounter and with more management and sustainability tools for the population of
the Antofagasta Region, looking towards the 200 years celebration of Chile’s
independence.
The “Bicentennial Project” is a set of social and infrastructure projects in health,
housing, education, tourism, sports, integration and social reinsertion, which will
contribute to improve the quality of life and development of the population of the
Antofagasta Region by 2010.
The initiative includes:
• No under privileged camp dwellings by 2010 in the Antofagasta Region, which will
eradicate 19 of these camps in the region so that 1,048 families can have a stable home
in new suburbs;
• Museum Park Mirador La Portada, which will refurbish the surroundings of this natural
monument and build a Biodiversity Museum;
• Rural Potable Water System, through which potable water, better distribution channels and
training will be provided to 5 rural communities in San Pedro de Atacama;
• Gymnasium and Events Room for Don Bosco School, a new cultural and sports gathering place
for more than 1,000 students, their families and the community;
• Toconao Library, which will strengthen education and provide connectivity and integration tools
to children and youth in the community;
• María Ayuda Shelter Home, to shelter maltreated children that are derived by the Justice Bureau;
• CREA Rehabilitation Centre, which will aid children with drug and alcohol abuse problems in the region;
• Artificial Beach in the City of Antofagasta, new family gathering center which will boost tourism development in the area;
• Sports Circuit in the City of Antofagasta, which will promote sports, recreation and healthy lifestyles.
