The Company represented more than 4.0% of the Chilean Gross Domestic Product in 2006, considering direct and indirect effects.
The growth of the Company has positively impacted the development of the Antofagasta Region. In effect, the socio-economic indicators for the region from the beginning of the Escondida operations to date show a favourable evolution:
• Chilean annual average growth in the period 1990-2006 was 6.0% compared to an 8.0% in the Antofagasta Region and it is estimated that Minera Escondida accounts for more than 4 points of this.
• The overall Chilean GDP per capita was US$ 8,500 in 2006, while for Antofagasta it is estimated at above US$20,000 for the
same period.
• According to the most recent official figures available, the decrease in poverty at national level between 1990 and 2003 was 51.3% (from 38.6% to 18.8%) and in the Antofagasta Region it was 66% (from 34.2% to 11.4%).
• Between 1990 and 2003 the Antofagasta Region achieved a greater advance in reducing income inequality. According to the Gini coefficient, the gap decrease was 15.1% in the Region compared with 1.7% in Chile as a whole.
• The employed workforce in the Antofagasta Region increased by 64% during the 1990-2006 period, while at national level the increase was of only 41%.
